In the late 1990s, the Structural Dynamics Research Corporation provided stock options exclusively to its senior managers. Leaders of one division, Advanced Test and Analysis, thought that was a bad idea. They believed that a 'magic cutoff point' separating equity holders from everyone else made it harder to attract the caliber of engineers they needed. They also wanted employees to think like owners. The easiest way to do that, they argued, was to give them an equity stake.
