In 2007, five of the fifteen winners of the Top Small Workplaces Award given out by the Wall Street Journal and Winning Workplaces were employee-owned, and a number of the others planned to move in that direction.
One of the employee-owned winners was Barclay Water Management (BWM), which was founded in 1932 in a Boston storage unit as Barclay Chemical Company. BWM has since grown into a leader in its industry and has become well-known for its innovative employment practices. It has 88 employees, with a corporate office and manufacturing plant in Watertown, Mass., as well as a regional facility in Edison, N.J. The company had almost $15 million in revenue in 2007.
